Former resident Charles Melough, 86, of Torrance, California, passed away on Sunday, February 10, after succumbing to pneumonia.
With great sadness his family said good-bye to a dear friend, father and grandfather. Charles passed peacefully from this life with his family and priest surrounding his bedside.
According to family members, he was a loving husband to Verna, his wife of 57 years, who survives him. He is also survived by his daughters, Lynn and Janine; son, Timothy; and grandsons, Jason and Kevin. Four brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.
Charles was born in County Down, Ireland on April 24, 1921 to John Melough and Cecilia Ward. He served in World War II in the British 8th Army under the command of General Montgomery from 1939 to 1945. He moved to Toronto, Canada, in 1947 where he later met and married Verna in November 1930.
In 1958, the young couple, along with many others of that era, moved to Southern California, where they went to work in the space industry. In the meantime, they had three children, two born in Toronto, Canada, and one in Southern California. They lived in Canyon Lake from 1989 until 2004 and were involved with many committees and clubs.
